Medellín's next great transformation is not already accomplished. Here we separate operating infrastructure from work under construction and ideas still on the drawing board.
1. Metro de la 80: under construction
The Metro de la 80 light-rail project is intended to expand rapid transit in western Medellín. Metro de Medellín has said the current contract schedule anticipates operations during the last quarter of 2028. Timelines can change; this is a projection, not an opening guarantee.

2. A greener river corridor
The Medellín River is both an organizing feature of the valley and a test of its ambitions. Public-space initiatives, river restoration, pedestrian connections and green corridors raise practical questions: Who can access the improvements? How will they endure? What happens during heavy rain and flooding?
3. Jobs beyond yesterday's economy
Universities, businesses, startup communities and technology institutions form an important part of Medellín's future. The most useful measure of success will not be headlines about innovation. It will be the quality and accessibility of real opportunities for residents.
4. Housing and belonging
Tourism and investment can create businesses and employment, but they can also raise housing costs and tensions around short-term rentals. We want to cover the benefits and costs without suggesting that visitors alone determine the city's future.
5. Neighborhood voices
Large projects matter, but so do street trees, libraries, safer crossings, local shops, affordable rent and public spaces in the barrios. Any future story worth telling should include the people who will live with its results.
